Fractal image compression has one of the most fascinating histories in the development of digital imaging because it emerged from a combination of pure mathematics, chaos theory, computer graphics, and the early dream of representing images through generative mathematical systems rather than through raw pixels. The origins of the idea can be traced back to the nineteenth century, long before digital computers existed.
