Fractal image compression is one of the most mathematically sophisticated image compression techniques ever developed. Although it never became a mainstream standard like JPEG or PNG, researchers and engineers were fascinated by it because it offered several theoretical and practical advantages that were radically different from traditional image coding methods.

The most important aspect of fractal compression is that it does not merely reduce image size by eliminating statistical redundancy. Instead, it attempts to represent the internal structure of an image mathematically through recursive transformations and self-similarity relationships.
