The advantages of fractal image compression arise primarily from its radically different view of what an image actually is.

Instead of treating images as collections of pixels, fractal compression treats them as recursively reproducible mathematical structures.

Its most important strengths include:

potentially enormous compression ratios,

mathematically elegant reconstruction,

fast decoding,

graceful scaling behavior,

and efficient modeling of natural self-similar textures.

Although practical limitations — especially extremely slow encoding — prevented widespread adoption, fractal compression remains one of the most intellectually ambitious approaches ever developed in digital image processing.

Its influence extended far beyond commercial image coding and helped shape broader ideas about:

generative representation,

self-similarity,

and mathematical models of visual information.
